Burgos, city that also names the capital of the province of Castilla-León, is a commercial and industrial center (flour, sugar, cattle raising, and wool textile) and an important knot of communications. Alfonso III founded it in the year 884 and it started its development when Moslims left the region (Xth century) and the Navarrian stopped being a threat after the battle of Atapuerca. It reached its climax in terms of wealth during the XVth and XVIth centuries, but later on it began a process of economic decline. It was the capital of the national Spanish area during the Civil War between 1936 and 1939, and today, after having experienced a great impulse in all possible aspects, it walks towards its maximum development as an agricultural, industrial and cultural center.

Places of interest

Its blood sausages (morcillas) or Santa Teresa egg yolks (yemas) are not the only reason that makes of Burgos a famous city. Apart from the gastronomical richness of the city, we cannot forget Burgos is a very important artistic city. The Cathedral, distinguished as a World Heritage Site, is a real jewel built in the Gothic tradition, between the XIIIth and the XIVth centuries. Nobody remains indifferent to this architectual beauty, with a gorgeous exterior, especially the façades and the dome. The interior is not less remarkable: a great richness in its three naves, the ambulatory, the cloister, the chapter house, and the chapels. There are also various Gothic churches in the city, as San Nicolás de Bari or San Gil and Santa Gadea, among others, or the Monasteries of San Juan y Las Huelgas, museums of paintings and medieval woven materials, respectively. Also, Burgos counts with three beautiful promenades along the river Arlanzón: el Espolón, the heart of the city, la Isla and la Quinta. And two parks: Fuente del Prior and Fuentes Blancas, starting point of a hike to the Monastery of San Pedro, 6 kilometers away from the city.

Tours around

Miranda de Ebro is the second city of the province due to its priviledged geographical situation in terms of communication with respect to the Basque Country, La Rioja and Castilla. The hill La Picota overlooks the city, with the ruins of a Medieval castle and the the rest of the town. Hiking trips from the city go either towards Pancorbo (a gorge that walks through a beautiful landscape with defiles, or the route of Obarenes towards Santa Gadea. The religious architecture of the city has its maximum representation with the Church of Espíritu Santo (the Holy Spirit), built in the Romanesque tradition, and the Gothic temples of San Juan Bautista and Santa María. Also, we can see the Carlos III bridge, a characteristical symbol of the city that joins the quarters of Allende and Aquende, both worth a visit.

Medina de Pomar offers different possibilities to the visitors. Among many routes, we can get to the Roman Bridge of this city by bike, visit the altomedieval tombs of Fresnedo, climb up the hill of La Tesla or cross the River Purón Gorge, in the way to Alava. Within this interesting monumental site we must point out the two towers placed at the Alcázar de los Velasco, built in the Moslim tradition during the XIVth century. Moreover, the churches of Nuestra Señora del Rosario and Santa Clara are also worth visiting, apart from the Monastery of Santa Clara, where the Condestables' Pantheon can be admired, as well as a big altarpiece and its own museum.

Aranda de Duero is the capital of the Duero Riverside, famous by producing one of the best red wines in Spain. A good proof of that is the group of wine cellars -called "bodegas"- where the best vintages are elaborated and stored. Apart from the visits to these wine cellars that occupy the majority of the city, we can also visit the churches of Santa María, San Juan Bautista, Los Verdugos Palace, el Humilladero, the Sanctuary of Virgen de las Viñas, patroness of the city that counts with many worshippers, the Main Square (Plaza Mayor) and the City Hall (Ayuntamiento).
