Vigo is one of the main cities in the Galician province of Pontevedra. It is also one of the most modern and urban developed cities in the Galician Autonomous Community. It was born from the initial Vicus Spacorum, Roman nucleus that maintained itself as a small fishing port through the Middle Ages. In the XVIth century the city started to prosper favoured by its condition of transatlantic port nearest to New York. It is the first fishing port in Spain and the second in Europe.
Moreover, its port activity has enhanced its industrial activity: tinned fish products, construction and repair work of fishing boats, sugars, liquors, flours, glass, porcelain and pottery and naval goods are the main base of its economy.
Vigo stands out for the magnificence of its landscape. From El Castro, ancient archaeological settlement, you can enjoy the view of La Guía, mountain with a hermitage that is also a viewing point, the Bay, very broad and of great beauty, the Cies Islands and a marvellous Natural Park. Other musts in Vigo are the historical quarter of El Berbés, the old Town Centre, with the Collegiate Church and its adjacent streets, the Quiñónez de León Museum and the Romanesque churches of Castrelos, Corujo and Bembrive and the Madroa Zoo.
Baiona is a town located at the end of the Vigo`s Estuary. It is mainly a summer town thanks to the beautiful beaches that surround it. Its fishing port received the Pinta from its journey to America with Christopher Columbus. Do not leave without visiting the Muralla Monte Boi (Town Walls), the Old Town Centre, considered to be a Historical and Artistic Complex, the Collegiate Church, of the XI-XIIth centuries, the Cruceiro, the Santísima Trinidad or the Virgen de la Roca.
Cangas is another of the towns neighbouring Vigo that are worth a visit. It is also a town with beautiful beaches. The town's economy is based mainly on the industry of fish tinned products, a great diversity of crops and the raising of livestock. There are several monuments to visit: Collegiate Church of the XVIth century, the Hermitage of San Blas, XVth century, and the Hospital's Chapel, XVIIth century.
