SEVILLA

The Giralda
The Giralda

Seville is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia. It is also one of the most beautiful cities in Spain and one of the most visited, mainly during the Feria de Abril (April Seville Festival) and the festivities of the Holy Week (Easter). Its main crops are rice and cotton and the most notorious industries are the agricultural machinery, the concrete, and the chemical, naval, textile, tobacco, construction and food industries.

Cesar conquered the ancient Iberian city, which he named Hispalis and made it Roman capital of Andalusia. Its maximum flourishing took place in the XVIth century with the Constitución de la Casa de Contratación (Establishment of the House of Engagement) that centralized in its port the monopoly of the commerce with the West Indies. During the Siglo de Oro (Golden Age) the city became a great centre of artistic culture. Seville kept on growing and becoming more beautiful and even though there were years of decay, its advantageous location and the improvement of the navigation in the XXth century helped maintain its splendour and its thriving industrial and commercial activity.

Places of interest

The city itself, the tablaos flamencos (flamenco bars), its Feria de Abril (April Seville Festival), its bulls ... they are all of great interest but in the right bank of the Guadalquivir the typical Barrio de Triana (Triana Quarter) connected to downtown Seville through the San Telmo Bridge (which can be raised), is noteworthy. The Almohades built the Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold) and the Gran Mezquita Mayor (Great Main Mosque), with the Giralda (Mohammedan minaret), symbolic image of the Andalusian city. Without any doubt, the great monument of the Christian Seville is the Cathedral. Other monuments that should also be visited are the Ayuntamiento (City Hall), the Hospital de la Sangre and a great number of palaces and private homes. The best example of the Baroque in the city is found in the churches of El Salvador, la Magdalena or San Luis. The magnificent Maria Luisa Park and the Santa Cruz Quarter (old Jewish Quarter), with narrow streets and squares, should also be visited. All those who love the Fiesta of the Bull will find in Seville La Maestranza, one of Spain's most important bullfighting rings.

Tours around

Écija has been acknowledged as a historical and artistic complex and is known as "the city of sun and towers" because of the great quantity of both elements found in this town of the Seville province. The main production in Écija is of cereal, olive, leguminous plants and fruit. It also counts with important flour, oil, chocolate and leathering factories that make up the main production of the town's economy. Among its charms the five National Monuments stand out: The Mudéjar Palace-Convent Las Teresas, the Peñaflor Palace, the Benamejí Palace, the Church of Santiago and the Church of the Hospitalito. Moreover, the Municipal History Archives is the most important one in the province of Seville.

Utrera is well known for its bullfighting bulls. Scarcely 27 kilometres away from the capital, Seville, this town's richness is based on the crops of wheat, olive trees and cotton and the textile, oils, soaps and flour industries. Its main charms are the Convento de las Carmelitas, built on the remains of a Medieval castle, the Church of Santa María de la Asunción, the Church of Santiago el Mayor, the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Consolación and the Municipal Theatre "Enrique Cuadra".

Carmona is located 30 kilometres away from Seville. It is an important agricultural (cereals, grapevine, olive trees and fruit trees) and industrial centre. It was also residence of Arab sovereigns and two Alcázares (Castles) remain from those times. The musts in Carmona are the Church of Santa María, the Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla (Entrance to Seville Castle), the Mudéjar churches, the Convent of the Concepción, the Church of San Pedro, the Church of San Felipe, the Convent of Santa Clara, the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall), the Roman Amphitheatre, the Palace-House of the Marqués de las Torres (Marquis of the Towers) and the Roman Necropolis, where the tombs of Servilia and that of the Elephant are found.
