Malaga is one of the main capitals of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia. It is also the main tourist centre denominated Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) because of the beautiful weather it enjoys throughout most part of the twelve months of the year. It was a Phoenician colony (Malaca) in the past, then a Roman city and a Byzantine city and port of the Moorish Kingdom of Granada that was later on conquered by the Reyes Católicos in 1487. Malaga is known for the importance of its port on the Mediterranean, which has a great activity. It counts not only with the industry of the sea (salted fish products, tinned products and pickled products) and of the land (wines, sugar and oils) but also with metallurgy, textile and chemical factories.
Malaga is made up by a traditional Town Centre, labyrinth of narrow streets, that surrounds the Alcazaba, various residential quarters (as Caleta, Limonar or Miramar) and a modern district, next to the Guadalmedina river. The Alcazaba (Citadel), the Cathedral and the churches of Santiago, Merced and Victoria, the Gibralfaro Castle, the Roman Theatre, the Archaeology Museum, the Puerta de las Ataranzas, the Buenavista Palace, Picasso's Home as a Child, the Marqués de Valdeflores Palace-House, the Aduana (Customs) Palace, the Fine Arts Museum or the Ancient María Cristina Conservatoire are some of the monuments and places of interest of the city of Malaga. The city is also well known for being hometown of the worldwide known Pablo Picasso.
Marbella is the Costa del Sol best known town. It not only has a high percentage of VIPs per square metre but is also chosen as a summer location by some of the best known and more relevant personalities in Spain for its good weather, its beaches, its golf courses, its pescaito frito (whitebait) and its landscapes. Moreover, the Old Town Centre of the town, the ruins of an Arab castle, the Convent of San Francisco, the Bonsai Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engravings and the Casino make it a place worth a visit.
Torremolinos is another of the most visited towns in Malaga. As a matter or fact, the first Thursday in September has been chosen as the day dedicated to the festivity of tourists. Torremolinos is also very close to the neighbouring town of Benalmadena, also in Malaga. Its greatest treasures are the Pimentel Tower, the Inca Windmill and the Maritime Promenade of Bajondilo, where the area known as Carihuela is full of restaurants and snack bars where the famous pescadito frito (white bait), typical of Malaga, can be enjoyed.
Estepona is 83 kilometres away from the capital, Malaga. It is also an important tourism centre, the same as its neighbouring towns. The Old Town centre, the ruins of the San Luis Castle, the ancient Church of the Fortress, the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the Maritime Promenade and the Marina are the musts for all those who visit Estepona.
Fuengirola stands out for the great number of beaches (8 kilometres long and with Blue Flag) and for its proximity to the capital, only 29 kilometres distance. The castle of Sohail from the XIIth century and that has recently been converted into an Auditorium is the main treasure of this town. From the Castle and the area of Carvajal you can walk along the Maritime promenade where the Balandro, one of the best restaurants in this municipality, is located.
