Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of the province of Las Palmas, belonging to the Canary Islands. It has more than 350,000 inhabitants and is settled on seven hills. Guanarteme is the industrial area with metallurgy, mechanic, electrical, wood, textile and chemical companies. Bananas, fruits and vegetables are exported from its port and it is also a fuel supply point for ships crossing the Atlantic.

From the artistic and monumental point of view the Cathedral, with a neoclassic façade, and the Churches of San Telmo, San Antonio, San Agustín, San Francisco and Santo Domingo stand out. Among the civil buildings of Las Palmas the Castillo de la Luz (Castle of Light) and the Casa de Colón (Colon's Home) are a must.

Tours around

Arucas is located scarcely 12 kilometres away from Las Palmas. It has a number of architectonic treasures like the Neogothic Church made with blue stone, its old town centre, the Culture House from the XVIIth century and the Municipality's Museum, full of magnificent painting, sculpture and exhibition rooms.

60 kilometres away from Las Palmas is the town of Maspalomas, where the Barranco of Fataga must be visited, a beautiful chain of natural dunes belonging to the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The Ocean Park, the biggest water park in the island of Gran Canaria, is also found here.

Mogán is one of the more touristy areas of Gran Canaria. It is more or less 80 kilometres away from the capital. In this area you will find many luxury leisure ports, tourist complexes and virgin coves to discover, as Medio Almud, Tiritaña and Barranco of the Frayles.
