Lanzarote, located at a distance of approximately 1000 km of the Iberian Peninsula and more or less 100 km away from Africa, is the most Eastern island of the Canary Islands. The island has a territory of 900 km2 including the islands of the Chinijo Archipiélago: La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara and los Roques of East and West. Lanzarote is made up by seven municipalities: Arrecife (the capital), Haría, San Bartolomé, Teguise, Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza, with a total aproximate population of 70,000 inhabitants. Most of them reside in the centre-south area. The island was given its name for a seafarer from Genova named Lanceloto Malocello. He arrived to the island in the second half of the fourteenth century and successive expeditions of French, English and Spanish seamen and merchants came to the islands known with the name of Islas Afortunadas (Fortunate Islands).

Fishing and agriculture have been the main occupation and sustenance of Lanzarote untill the tourism sector started to gradually expand. It has gradually grown and opted for excellent services and facilities that are also respectfull with the surroundings and the environment.

Places of interest

Among its most important touristic attractions are the creation of the Art, Culture and Tourism Centres, belonging to the Insular Town Council and promoted and created by the universal artist César Manrique. Making use of the island`s natural charms the Centres have become real works of art and representative emblematic points of Lanzarote. The continuous worry in the island in order to mantain its history unchangeable and its coherence have achieved the survival of ancestral practices, craftsmanships, local and current gastronomy, styles and designs loyal to the insular identity, an excellent preservation of the historical and artistic heritage, of its monuments and majestic houses, the cellebration of its festivities and popular traditions… in short its folklore and culture.

Tours around

The most important touristic sites of the island must be visited. In the National Park of Timanfaya a great variety of geological phenomenon related to its volcanic nature as well as a great bilogical diversity with 180 different plant species can be observed. The César Manrique Foundation is the island`s cultural centre with the organization of different activities that make it relevant in the international panorama. Another art centre that stands out is the Contemporary Art Museum located in the San José Castle, fortress built between 1776 and 1779 by King Carlos III. North of the island of Lanzarote and at the foot of the volcano Monte de la Corona (whose last outbreak took place 3000 years ago), at Jameos del Agua, starts one of the most interesting systems of caves and tubes of the world. El Golfo is the name of the crater of which only half of it remains, with a green lagon. The Castle Museum of Santa Barbara is located on the Guanapay Mountain, east of Teguise, and was built by Sancho de Herrera as a privileged watchtower at the coast. Teguise, which was Lanzarote`s capital up to 1852, has become one of the main cultural and touristic centres of the island, other towns that should be visited are Arrecife and Bartolomé.
