London has 8 million inhabitants, and it is the biggest city in Europe, with 1.600 km2. The centre lies by the river Thames, where the communication and economical heart of the city is located. The charismatic capital of England and of the United Kingdom has a very particular atmosphere, as the setting invites success. The first written mention of the town of London dates back to the Ist century, as a big business centre occupied by the Roman Empire. In the IXth century Alfredo left the city, and William the Conqueror granted it the first formal charter of his reign. He was this monarch who built the Tower of London.
After some ups and downs, including a big arson attack or the Black Death, the German bombing in the II World War seriously damaged London.
At night, a flood of tourists walks the West End coming back from the shows, while the destitute (better known as homeless) make their own bedroom at any arcade or shop lobby. There are obviously many places of interest to tourists: Big Ben, the royal guard change at Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, Madame Tussaud Wax Museum, Albert Memorial, Trafalgar Square, the Tower of London However, there are also many quiet squares, narrow streets and amazing green spaces, such as Hyde Park, Green Park and St James's Park, all of them a few minutes from West End shops. You can also go shopping for days and days in London: Harrods (upper class), the best international fashion firms or street markets on weekends (Portobello, ). Alternative theatre and music can be found everywhere, and there are very interesting performances here and there. It is a good chance to go to the theatre, to the opera or to a dance performance.
London is surrounded by beautiful places to visit. In fact, it is quite near many other emblematic cities of the United Kingdom, such as Edinburgh or Scotland. The University and Colleges of Cambridge, the county capital, are quite famous. It is a very well built city, with a significant art collection, surrounded by lovely parks and fields and full of palaces and churches. In one word, a must when visiting London.
Another city to visit is Canterbury. This artistic and historical place has wonderful buildings and gorgeous cathedrals. It is the archbishopric of England. Canterbury is a farming plain surrounded by medieval walls. It was the urban and religious centre of England in the Middle Ages, and it stills maintains that tradition.
Another city that stands out is Oxford. Surrounded by parks and gardens, it is the capital of the county too. It was the Episcopal headquarters before, and the history of its famous universities has given it a noble artistic appearance. Indeed, it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, with its colleges, palaces, churches and the worldwide known University.
