FRANKFURT

Frankfurt
Frankfurt

Spread over the two sides of the Main River before encountering the Rhine River, Frankfurt is a city with two sides. On one hand, the heartless financial capital of Germany, with its fulcrum at the Westend district, and on the other, a civilized placed that every year invests on art much more than any other European city. In fact, Frankfurt is the recreational centre for the Hesse area and it counts with a good number of theatres, galleries and museums. The first testimonies on the city of Frankfurt date back to the year 793, although at the time its name was Frankonuvard.

Approximately half of the city, including almost all its centre, was destroyed during the war, and those who reconstructed it preferred innovation to remodelling. The result is an outline that resembles more Chicago than Germany.

Places of interest

The historical centre is at the Römerberg Square, where Saint Nicholas' Church is placed. In front of the Historical Museum it is the most beautiful house of the city, the Haus Wertheim, built during the XVIIth century and transformed today into a restaurant. We must also point out the Cathedral, surprisingly not an archiepiscopal head (it gained its status by crowning royal members during the XIVth century). And, of course, the compulsory visits to the quarter of Sachsen Hausen, where you can go out at night to eat, drink, and spend some time, the Botanic garden Palmengarten, the covered market of Klein Markthalle and the open-air-market of Flohmarkt, which takes place every Saturday. The commercial artery of the city is at Zeil. However, without any possible doubts, the pride of Frankfurt is the Stock Market, in front of which there are two statues, one with a bear crumbling market prices and the other one with a bull raising them with its horns.

Tours around

Mannheim is a city in Baden-Württemberg, in Germany, in the neighbouring area of Frankfurt. A modern city in its layout, it extends around the castle built during the XVIIIth century. It is a very important industrial centre, with factories that produce machinery, vehicles, precision instruments, plastic materials, chemical products and nourishing products, textiles, cellulose and glass, among other things. It was fortified under Federico IV in 1606 and burnt by the French in 1689. Since 1720 it has been the capital for the electors of the Palatinate, and in 1803, Napoleon included it in the Great Dukedom of Baden.

Bonn is the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany, and while in Frankfurt, it is worthwhile to come to visit it. The city has a Romanesque Cathedral from the XIth century, but it has also an important University founded in 1818, the Museum of the Province, the Museum of the City, the Beethoven Museum and the Beethovenhall, a magnificent musical auditorium.

Giessen is less than 66 kilometres up North from Frankfurt. The city, with its university, has remarkable buildings as the Old Town Hall, the Castle, and the Liebig Museum, where the famous chemist overtook his most important researches. Also, we can point out the factories that produce cigars, beer, and gum articles.
