Düsseldorf, the capital of Rhineland, lies by the Rhine. It is the richest city in Germany, a true representation of the economical miracle: organized, prosperous and self-sufficient. Not so industrialized as the neighbouring countries, Düsseldorf is an important administrative and financial centre: in fact, one of the most significant stock exchanges in Germany is in Düsseldorf, as well as the headquarters of many multinationals, including Thyssen-Haus and Mannesmann-Haus. In the Middle Ages the towers of the churches and the town hall were a symbol of identity. Even if the visit is very short, Düsseldorf is quite expensive. However, the night atmosphere is the most festive one in Germany.
The Duke of Berg owned the city in the XIVth century, then by the court Counts of Neuborg in the XVIIth century, and after the Napoleonic wars, by Prussia.
One of the brightest areas in Düsseldorf is Altsdat, with two peculiar churches: St Lambertus, a brick building from the XIVth century, has a high chapiter. St Andreas was the mausoleum of the Palatine Electors, who were among the seven princes selected by the Holy Roman Empire. On the opposite bank lies Niederkassel district, full of traditional German pubs and tourists from all over the world. Anyway, the most fashionable area is Königsallee Street, better known as "Kö". There are also many museums in Düsseldorf, which are hereinafter enumerated. In Düsseldorf you can taste the real and genuine German beer, and listen to good music. Dr.Jazz pub, at Flingerstr Street, is always packed with people.
There are quite many things to do and visit in the surroundings. Benrath Schlo is 10 kilometres away from Düsseldorf. It is a Rococo castle from the XVIIIth century, with a big park and a huge pond of 700 meters, that is, a wonderful landscape. 8 kilometres distance from Düsseldorf is Neuss, and there we find Sankt-Quirinius Münster, a late Romanesque cathedral. One of the places of biggest interest to tourists is Warner Bros, Movie World, an amusement park 60 kilometres away from Düsseldorf. It is open from April to October, and brings Hollywood to Germany, to Bottrop to be precise.
